What Is Segmented Woodturning? (And Why It Changes What a Light Can Look Like)

Most people have never heard the term segmented woodturning. Most people have also never stood in a room with a segmented pendant light switched on and watched what it does to the walls.

The two facts are related.

Segmented woodturning is a technique that makes possible things that a single piece of wood cannot do — geometry, pattern, color contrast, forms that would split or fail if turned from one solid blank. Understanding how it works makes it obvious why the result looks the way it does. And why nothing else looks quite like it.

What Solid-Wood Turning Is — and What It Can't Do

Traditional woodturning starts with a single blank — a chunk of wood mounted on a lathe, shaped with tools as it spins. The result is determined entirely by what was in that blank to begin with. One species. One grain direction. One color. The turner works with what's there and removes everything that isn't the final form.

It's a beautiful discipline. But it has hard limits.

You can't introduce a second species. You can't create a geometric pattern inside the wall of a turned vessel. You can't engineer the open cutouts that let light pass through in a specific repeating sequence. The material dictates the outcome. The turner follows it.

How Segmented Woodturning Works

Instead of starting with a solid blank, segmented work starts with individually cut pieces — segments — that are precision-cut and assembled into rings. Those rings are then stacked, glued, and mounted on the lathe as a single unified form.

The precision required is unforgiving. Each segment in a ring has to be cut to an exact angle so that when assembled, the joints close perfectly and the ring is true. A standard ring might contain a dozen or more segments. A single miscut piece — off by a fraction of a degree — throws the whole ring out of round. There's no adjusting. The segment gets cut again or the ring gets remade.

Once the assembled form is on the lathe, it turns like a solid piece of wood — except that what's being revealed as material is removed isn't a single grain pattern but a designed one. The turner isn't discovering what the wood offers. The turner already decided what the finished form would contain before the first segment was cut.

What Open-Segment Work Adds

Standard segmented turning produces solid-walled vessels. Open-segment turning — the technique used in the Bloodwood & Canary pendants — takes it further.

In open-segment work, the segments are assembled with deliberate gaps between them. Those gaps are structural — they have to be sized and positioned precisely so the form holds together under turning — and they become the cutout pattern in the finished piece. The basket-weave pattern in these pendants isn't carved or cut after the fact. It's built into the assembly from the first ring up. Every gap is intentional. Every opening is where it is because it was placed there.

When a bulb is lit inside an open-segment pendant, light passes through those gaps and projects onto the surrounding walls and ceiling. The pattern the pendant casts is the same pattern that's built into its structure. The light doesn't just come from the fixture. It comes from the geometry.

Why Exotic Wood Species Change the Result

Segmented work can be done with any wood. But the technique reaches its full potential with species that have something to say — strong color, distinctive grain, density that takes a finish at a different level than domestic softwoods.

Bloodwood is one of the densest tropical hardwoods in the world. The deep arterial crimson isn't a stain or a dye — it's the wood's natural color, and it intensifies under a multi-coat epoxy finish rather than fading. Canary Wood brings a warm gold that reads almost luminous next to the crimson. In a segmented form, those two colors are arranged in a precision pattern. The contrast isn't accidental. It's the point.

No two pieces of Bloodwood are identical — the grain shifts from segment to segment — which means no two pendants built from this process are identical either. The technique is repeatable. The result never is.

What This Means for the Finished Light

A segmented woodturned pendant light is not a piece of wood with a hole drilled in it for a cord. It's a designed object — every element of its appearance the result of decisions made before the lathe was switched on. The color placement, the pattern, the wall thickness that determines how much light passes through versus how much the wood holds back — all of it planned, cut, assembled, and then turned into a form that looks like it grew that way.

That's why it looks the way it does when the light is on. And why there's nothing quite like it hanging from a ceiling.
